On page 54, E. tells socrates that "whatever we put foward, somehow always keeps going around for us and isn't willing to stay where we place it. I found his use of the words 'we' and 'us' interesting for some reason. It says to me that E. still believes that the the confusion he is feeling at going around in circles is also having the same affect on socrates....that socrates also feels confused...I dunno, it just struck me as an odd phrase. So back to what we were discussing wednesday, I thnk it is human nature to try to answer questions like the meaning of life and what is pious even though we realize that there is no set answer, or at least no answer that will work for every example real life presents. Humans cant grasp facts such as stars being millions of years away, we just can't comprehend it, so our minds try to fit some version of a definition in to please ourselves. If E. had come up with a good religiously bsed definition that socrates couldn't refute, I think socrates would have had to accept what E. believed, but not necessarily adopt that thinking for himself because although what E. believes sounds possibly, socrates is still not a religious man and will not be able to accept E's definition as his own.

suggestion

Whats the point of having a blog if nobody reads it...our next assignment should be to comment on someone elses blog, I feel as if I am writing to myself....come to think of it...nobody will probably ever read this, hehe

Character

So, socrates just randomly comes up to E. and starts a convo with him...why? Was he just bored abd wanted to shoot the philosophical breeze or what. As we have predetermined, they knew each other before, so socrates already had the gist of what E.s personality is like and probably knew he was pompous and not the brightest crayon in the box. So, did he start up the 'debate' to make himself feel better about his greater wisdom....socrates can almost be seen as a jerk too, he had no real reason for trying to send E into a mental breakdown of sorts...was this socrates idea of fun?

Abe

At the very end of class the question was posed "So what were the other people in the story thinking about all this?" It was mentioned that the servent was left at the bottom of the mountian and I thought....so why was he left at the bottom of the mountian? Abe must have known he was doing something wrong if he felt the need to keep his servent at the bottom and "in the dark" so to speak (assuming the servent really didn't know what was going on, but thats doubtful)He knew that if the servent came along, he would try to stop abe or at least would rat him out later after his son was dead (were there jails or anything ack then?....maybe it was just hanging or some gruesome death type thing) So anyway, if Abe knew what he was doing was just plain wrong and felt the need to hide it, from his wife even, why didn't he question it or fight it? I knwo you aren't supposed to question God or anything, but think about the antichrist...hes supposed to come acting as the savior thats come but basically be a wolf in sheeps clothing....I would have had to question that, or at least it would have crossed my mind. God didn't make people to be unquestioning and just follow him around like mindless beings.

What did I like least to read...so many choices

Okay, I liked reading Matthew the least because it was broken up and I thought that made it very choppy...it didn't flow well. Everything else we have read so far has been somewhat like a narrative story whereas Matthew was just a bunch of commands thrown at you. For someone who isn't framiliar with the bible you don't realize that it is Jesus that is speaking to a bunch of people until the last line which just completely threw off what I was thinking before then.

Pennies

I think the penny exercise really will help to single out a specific part of the text, a specific paragraph or whatever and analyze it. Before I was having trouble thinking about the specifics for the paper because I was analyzing the work as a whole and now it should be much easier to just focus on that one story and really put it under a microscope.
God said that he made humans to "Fill the earth and conquer it" But when humans start building towers and cities, God wants it to stop, it angers him. He then creates language and cultural barriers. That just seems backwards and the culture/language barriers have caused way more problems than its ever solved.
